LINER
NOTES
All tracks
on this CD were recorded by Talking Heads fans from all around
the world as a tribute to the band and its former members. Of
course a cover version is never as good as the original (at
least, that's what the reviewers say), but by refusing Famous
People with Really Big Names to submit songs (sorry Tom Jones),
we can at least guarantee a certain level of originality. All
artists featured here contributed their recordings for free,
and for this reason you should support them by purchasing their
music.
The whole
idea originated back in 1996 when I contributed some time and
a J-card to a tribute cassette for the Dutch band The Nits.
I thought it would be nice to do a similar project for Talking
Heads, and I asked people on my talking-heads.net website and
the TH mailing list to record their favorite songs and send
them to me. Good intentions and fun were way more important
than expensive recording equipment and fancy studios, so everybody
could join in.
In July
1997 I'd collected over 90 minutes of covers, and put out a
cassette called "The Name of None of These Bands in Talking
Heads", containing 23 covers of songs by Talking Heads, David
Byrne and Tom Tom Club. The tape was only available on the TH
website and still circulates among fans.
People
kept sending me songs however, so a year later a similar tape
called "Letting the Tapes go By" was brought into circulation.
I could probably go on forever putting out tapes like this,
but it cost me a lot of time to dub and send all the tapes,
while I knew that the tapes did not reach many fans after all.
...
And that's
where the idea for this CD came from. "Don't Worry About the
Cover Band" (I really ran out of silly titles, so don't hold
your breath for a sequel) contains re-recorded and remastered
versions of songs from the original covertapes, as well as newly
recorded material by bands from seven different countries.
I hope
you enjoy the music collected here and I would like to thank
all the contributors, both those who made it to the CD and those
who didn't, for the hard work they put into this project.
